Clarity has to do with how clean the diamond is internally, and to some extent, externally, though mostly in relation to the inside. This is done at ten times magnification for grading purposes. Our recommendation is that you use Slightly Included (SI) or better diamonds for most jewelry. Clarity
Carat is a reference to the weight. Think of carat as something that can be converted, through a lot of effort, to kilograms or even American pounds. Carats are more closely converted to grams. Tips

When buying a diamond one-half carat or larger, try to find a diamond that has been certified by an independent gemological laboratory. We have some listed at the bottom of this page. You should be able to talk with your jeweler about this preference.
Buy Certified
Ask your jeweler to provide you with several options from which to choose. For instance, if you would like to buy a 1.50 carat diamond, ask to see at least two or three different diamonds this size, or near this size. The reason for this is that each diamond is unique, and will have a slightly different character or look.
